Nathan Fillion just flipped the script on The Rookie. At San Diego Comic-Con, the actor and showrunner Alexi Hawley teased a jaw-dropping shift for season 8: the premiere is filmed in Prague, a first for the usually LA-bound series. Fillion compared the vibe to Casino Royale, calling the Czech capital “an amazing city” fit for major action set pieces.

Hawley confirmed that shooting overseas wasn’t budget madness, it was ambition. The decision signals The Rookie doubling down on cinematic stakes and international scale to kick off the new season with a bang.

The veteran procedural follows John Nolan (Fillion), the oldest rookie on the LAPD. Now a training officer, Nolan’s world is about to intersect with the likes of international espionage, jaw-dropping action sequences, and a gritty undercover storyline involving Lucy Chen. Expect drama, unresolved plotlines from season 7, like fugitive Oscar and Monica’s immunity deal and a possible return of Pete Davidson as Nolan’s half-brother.

Fillion also admitted that rising popularity has its downsides, shoots in LA are a challenge when fans interrupt takes by yelling “We love The Rookie” from passing cars. Still, he leans into it: “I’ll take it, though.”

Renewed for season 8 in April, The Rookie is slated for a January 2026 midseason release. As Nolan’s journey evolves, so does the world he patrols and so does the show’s ambition.
