The rap legend isn’t just fighting back, he’s making sure the legal tab comes with consequences for what his team calls a “frivolous” case.

Nelly is turning tables on his former St. Lunatics bandmate’s legal team, demanding $78,007 in legal fees after a judge called the lawsuit against him “frivolous.”
Ali Jones, a one-time member of the St. Lunatics (yep, the same crew that launched Nelly), sued the rapper claiming he was snubbed on credits and royalties from Country Grammar. But the case immediately ran into trouble. Three of the St. Lunatics publicly disowned it, saying they’d never signed off on the lawsuit.
Nelly’s legal squad, led by veteran litigator Kenneth Freundlich, argued that Ali’s claims were legally dead on arrival. The judge agreed, labeling the case “unreasonable” and “vexatious.”
So now, Nelly is writing a check request back to the lawyer. Freundlich broke down how the $78K came to be: 142 hours of legal work after November 2024, when things clearly went south for Ali’s team.
Ali’s attorney, Precious Felder Gates, says she believed deeply in her client’s fight and thought the claims did deserve “judicial consideration.” She’ll have a chance to argue for a lower fine but make no mistake, the court is sending a message.
