Love, Lust or Just a Life Lesson? Zayn Keeps It Real and Sparks a Firestorm

Zayn Malik just gave the internet a huge moment to unpack. In a candid appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, the former One Direction star revisited one of the most talked about lines of his post-breakup era. After years of speculation about his on-again, off-again romance with supermodel Gigi Hadid, Malik confessed that he does not believe he was ever truly in love with her. His take on love is blunt, refreshing and causing all kinds of reactions online.
The timeline here matters. Zayn and Gigi first sparked romance rumors in 2015 and went public soon after. They spent around six years together, had a daughter named Khai in 2020 and split for good in 2021. Since then, both have moved on in their own ways. Gigi has been linked to actor Bradley Cooper, while Zayn focused on music and self reflection.

During the podcast, host Alex Cooper asked Zayn to clarify past comments about love. His answer was unfiltered and introspective. He explained that his understanding of love has evolved over time and that what he once thought was love may have been something else entirely. He admitted it could have been lust or a different kind of connection but stopped short of calling it real love. In his words, his feelings at the time just did not meet his current definition of love.
At the same time, Zayn was careful to respect Hadid’s role in his life. He said he will always love her because she is the mother of his child and described his admiration for her as “the utmost respect.” That line has become the emotional anchor of his remarks because it frames his honesty without turning into full on shade.
This is not the first time Zayn has said he is unsure if he’s ever been in love. Two years ago he touched on similar feelings in another interview. But hearing it now in a longer, reflective chat gives more weight to his personal evolution. Fans online are split. Some think he is bravely honest and self aware. Others argue it’s cold or even unnecessary given the shared history and their daughter.
