After 8 Seasons, The Chi Will Take Its Final Bow

Creator Lena Waithe ends the saga of Chicago’s South Side, giving fans a crescendo, not a quiet fade-out

The news landed today: The Chi is officially ending. Showtime and creator Lena Waithe have confirmed that the upcoming eighth season will be its last.

Waithe says this was never about prestige or longevity for its own sake. She built The Chi to be a voice for the overlooked, the complicated, the real people in Chicago’s South Side. In her words, the show always wanted to capture “the beauty, the pain, the grit, and the magic” of that community.

Over its run, The Chi did more than entertain. It shattered records. In 2024, it became the longest running Black scripted drama on American television, or surpassed Empire to take that mantle. Its Season 7 premiere drew over two million viewers across platforms, marking its most streamed debut ever.

So why end now, at the top of the game? Waithe points to story integrity. She believes the characters, the arcs, the city itself deserve closure not endless stretch. She promises a final season that honors the world and the fans.

Production on Season 8 is slated for 2026. Once that season hits screens, The Chi will join heavyweights like Weeds, Dexter, and Homeland as one of Showtime’s longest-running series, just behind Shameless.

That’s your cue to rewatch your favorite moments, quote your favorite lines, and revisit the stakes and struggles of Emmett, Ronnie, Kevin, Alicia, and all those who made The Chi special.

This isn’t a death, it’s a door closing with dignity. Lena Waithe is sending her show off on her terms. And she plans to keep telling new stories, giving space for unseen voices, and making sure we are all still seen.
