Paystack Suspends Co-Founder Ezra Olubi Amid Allegation Storm

When fintech fairy tales meet headline horror, Nigeria’s payments darling hits rough waters.

Paystack, the Nigerian fintech titan that soared from Lagos to a multi-hundred-million-dollar exit with Stripe, is in damage control mode. Why? Because its co-founder and CTO, Ezra Olubi, has been suspended, full stop. The allegation: sexual misconduct involving a subordinate.

Paystack’s official word: “We take matters of this nature extremely seriously. Effective immediately, Ezra has been suspended from all duties and responsibilities pending the outcome of a formal investigation.” No fluff. No sugar-coat. Just corporate speak wrapped in awkward urgency.

Social media users trawled through old tweets attributed to Olubi dating back to 2009-2013, surfacing jokes and remarks described as deeply inappropriate. The tweets may not be a smoking gun but they’re fuel to the fire of public outrage and scrutiny.

Paystack was founded in 2015, co-led by Olubi and Shola Akinlade. It became the first Nigerian startup in the prestigious Y Combinator accelerator and by 2020 drew the attention of Stripe in a landmark acquisition. The rise has been meteoric, the narrative of African tech triumph strong. So when someone inside cracks, the whole storyline starts to tilt.

We love our African tech wins. We celebrate them. But we must also ask the hard questions. What happens when the creator of the platform crosses lines? What happens when culture, power and legacy collide with accountability? Paystack’s next chapter will show whether one of Africa’s great success machines can withstand a scandal built on trust, reputation and moral code.
