Kid Rock Calls Jay-Z a ‘DEI Hire’ and the Internet Lost It

When your hot take gets smoked by stats and straight facts

Kid Rock’s latest pop culture flex turned into a full blown flop. On Fox News, the Detroit rocker suggested that Jay-Z’s role running the NFL’s Super Bowl halftime show was basically a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion job placement. The moment sounded like a punchline, and the numbers and reputation of Jay-Z turned it into one.

Rock was on The Ingraham Angle on February 9, promoting his Turning Point USA “All-American Halftime Show” and explaining why he was salty about Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl performance. In his telling, the NFL looked at Black viewers, saw Jay-Z’s name, and thought “DEI hire”. He said “nothing against Jay-Z, I respect him for his hustle and his music” but doubled down on the idea that Hov was selected to appeal to Black audiences rather than because he was the best choice for the job.

Jay-Z is a 25-time Grammy winner, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, and widely recognized as one of the most successful entertainers ever. The man has sold over 140 million records worldwide. He oversees Roc Nation, a powerhouse entertainment and sports management company. He helped build the modern halftime show into a cultural centerpiece with historic performances from artists like Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, The Weeknd, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Kendrick Lamar. Those shows repeatedly smashed viewership records before Bad Bunny even entered the equation.

Meanwhile, Kid Rock’s alternative show reportedly drew a fraction of the audience. Public reaction was swift and fierce online. People mocked the idea that a global icon like Jay-Z could be labeled a token hire when his resume reads like a hip-hop hall of fame blueprint. Some pointed out that Rock’s own peak cultural impact was more than two decades ago. Others joked that labeling Jay-Z a DEI hire was like calling Michael Phelps a DEI swim coach.

Rock’s comments may resonate with his base, but most of the rest of the internet sees it as a bizarre take that doesn’t hold up to basic facts. Jay-Z didn’t get the gig because of optics. He got it because he literally built the halftime show into the global spectacle it is today.
