John Legend recently took the stage at the BMAC Gala and accepted the Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award. Amid the applause he paused to reflect on his 12-year marriage with Chrissy Teigen. He said their journey has been transformative. Parenthood changed everything. Shared joy, personal tragedy, hard conversations, all of that, he said, “cements the bond” between two people.
Legend and Chrissy were legally married on September 10, 2013 in New York City. They then held a wedding celebration in Lake Como, Italy. In 2023 they renewed their vows in that same Italian spot. For their 12th anniversary they kept it low key. Legend described their celebration as “a nice dinner date.” Chrissy was more candid about moments from their wedding. She remembered dropping the ring during vows. She recalled being too nervous to dance during their first dance even though Stevie Wonder was performing the song “Ribbon in the Sky.” That is a memory she treasures and regrets at once.

Their family now includes four children: Luna Simone (9), Miles Theodore (7), and the twins Esti Maxine and Wren Alexander (2). Legend talked about how parenthood forced him to grow up, to shift priorities, and to face tragedies together with Chrissy. He said the challenges made them more human, more connected, able to hold each other through storms.
This feels like more than celebrity love talk. It feels like an honest admission that magic doesn’t come without cracks. That in a world of highlight reels Legend and Teigen choose to show the journey too. Fans see wedding photos and hit songs. Legend reminds us that what matters is staying when it is hard. Because staying becomes itself the most powerful kind of love.
